Key differences
On the NWS checklist they’re equal. NWS recommends receivers with the Public Alert™ and/or NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards logo. The Public Alert standard (CTA-2009-C) requires a tone alarm, SAME and battery backup (NWS). Both models appear under Midland Radio on the NWS logo list, and both spec sheets say “Public Alert Certified.” Both also have the two jacks NWS describes:
- an external antenna jack, for weak-signal locations;
- an external alert jack, for devices such as strobe lights or bed shakers.
The jacks are labelled in each owner’s manual (Midland WR120 owner’s manual, WR120DSP 1-4-2024; Midland WR400 owner’s manual, 11-03-25). All Midland documents cited on this page are published on midlandusa.com. We link Midland’s homepage rather than individual pages.
Where they differ (Midland WR120 and WR400 spec sheets):
- Siren: the WR120 lists a 90 dB siren, the WR400 an 85 dB siren. Midland doesn’t state the measuring distance or method, so we can’t say how they compare in a bedroom.
- Alert count: the WR400 claims “Over 80 Emergency Alerts.” The WR120’s spec sheet says “Over 60,” and the same product page’s headline says “85+.” Event codes come from NWS, so the exact count matters less than having SAME and selectable alerts, which both have.
- Batteries: the WR120’s backup takes 3 × AA, the WR400’s 4 × AA. Neither includes batteries, and Midland doesn’t give backup run time for either.
- WR400 extras: AM/FM radio with 4 presets, a dual alarm clock (wake to AM/FM, weather or buzzer), a continuous-backlight option, a headphone jack and a USB port for charging a phone. The spec sheet calls it “USB Output.” The 11-03-25 manual labels it a “USB-C Charging Port.” Midland gives no output rating, so treat it as a top-up, not a power bank spec.
- Languages: the WR120 manual offers English, Español and Français. We didn’t find a language list for the WR400.
Both product pages let you set the alert tone level high, medium or low (sources: Midland WR120 product page and Midland WR400 product page, on midlandusa.com).
Warranty: one conflict in Midland’s documents. The WR400 manual gives a 1-year limited warranty. The WR120 manual linked from Midland’s page (titled WR120DSP) lists “One-Year Limited Warranty” in its contents. The warranty text itself says “three years” and refers to “any Midland GMRS transceiver,” which looks like wording copied from a GMRS manual. We list the WR120 warranty as conflicting until Midland clarifies.
Setting either one up properly. Program your county’s 6-digit SAME code and the correct transmitter channel. NWS warns: “Do NOT program your radio for a louder or clearer station not designated as a SAME channel. You will not receive alerts” (NWS: Using NWR SAME). Midland’s product-page FAQs add two points:
- Tornado and similar warnings are always on and can’t be switched off (source: FAQ on the Midland WR120 product page, midlandusa.com).
- By default, the desktop radios stay silent for the Required Weekly Test. The ADVISORY light comes on instead (source: FAQ on the Midland WR400 product page, midlandusa.com).
Which one fits you
- Bedside or hallway alarm, lowest cost: the WR120 covers every item on the NWS checklist at $54.99, with the louder listed siren (90 dB).
- Kitchen or nightstand radio you’ll also listen to: the WR400 adds AM/FM, dual alarms and phone charging for $109.99.
- Weak signal where you live: either one. Both have an external antenna jack. Check your nearest transmitter on the NWS station listing first.
- Want weather alerts on the trail, too? These are receive-only home radios. For the GMRS handhelds and mobiles that list a NOAA weather feature, see the weather radio guide and how to choose a GMRS radio. On those, SAME support is not yet verified.
Unit size and weight (Midland publishes only gift-box dimensions), the WR400's display languages, and battery-backup run time are not yet verified.
